Working in the European Union

On Wednesday, 21 October, PorterShed is offering bookable 30-minute, one-to-one appointments with Killian Browne, First Secretary / Deputy Director in the EU Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

These office hours are an opportunity to sit down with Killian and ask your own questions about working in the European Union, the different routes into the EU institutions, and where to start if an EU career is something you are considering.

Each appointment is a conversation shaped around what you want to know. You might want to understand the kinds of roles available across the European Commission, Parliament, Council and EU agencies; how recruitment through the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) works; what graduate entry routes look like; or how traineeships such as the European Commission's Blue Book programme can provide an introduction to working within the EU institutions.

You can also use the session to ask practical questions about where opportunities are advertised, how different recruitment routes work, what qualifications, languages or experience may be relevant, and how to make sense of the various competitions, traineeships and other opportunities available.

The sessions are aimed particularly at students, soon-to-be graduates, recent graduates and those at an early stage in their careers. You do not need to have decided that a career in the EU is for you. If you are simply curious about what opportunities exist, what working in the institutions involves, or how someone from Ireland can begin exploring an EU career, these office hours are a chance to find out more directly.

Appointments are free but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
